The Geothermal Atlas of Mainland Portugal is a mission-oriented project of fundamental importance for the country’s geothermal knowledge, carried out at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG) in a systematic manner for more than 20 years. It was created following other mapping projects, incorporating diverse information from various institutional sources and processed so that it can be applied in the dissemination, training, and research of the different types of geothermal resources in Mainland Portugal, serving as a lever for the sector’s development. It constitutes a dynamic research effort in continuous update, integrating various parameters from different origins, applicable to geothermal studies, whose integrated and homogenized processing enables visualization of the geothermal characteristics of the country at a national scale. As sources of information for producing geothermal maps of Mainland Portugal - processed and directed toward the various types of geothermal resources and uses - the earliest works began more than 30 years ago, forming the basis of the Portuguese contributions to successive European Geothermal Resource Atlases, the most recent of which was published in 2002. This information is continuously complemented by additional geothermal data originally acquired for geothermal purposes, as well as information obtained for other geoscientific objectives.
